JOEL PARKINSON CLAIMS REEF HAWAIIAN PRO

Australia’s Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, QLD) made a brilliant return to the pro surfing stage after six months on the sidelines with injury, winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro today to take the lead in the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series. Parkinson, 29, is the two-time defending champion of this Hawaiian series that is the final stage of the ASP World Tour. Mourning by Andy Irons | Luto por Andy Irons

Andy Irons, a three-time world surfing champion and one of the more popular athletes on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals' elite World Tour, has died after becoming seriously ill during a competition in Puerto Rico.

Irons was only 32 and leaves behind a pregnant wife, Lyndie, and younger brother, Bruce, who is a former World Tour competitor.

Irons' death was confirmed Tuesday by his family, which in a statement said he passed away during a layover while between flights from Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii.

According to the Associated Press he was found dead in a Dallas hotel room at mid-morning Tuesday. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy Wednesday to determine the cause of death. Irons had checked into the hotel Monday.

The family's statement begins: "The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii's Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion."

Irons, who was born and raised on Kauai, pulled out of the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico on Sunday, citing an illness he contracted during the previous contest in Portugal.

He was known for his fast but fluid style on a surfboard, and for his epic heat battles with Kelly Slater, many of which occurred as Irons was reeling off his titles in succession from 2002-04.

O tricampeão mundial Andy Irons, 32, faleceu nesta terça-feira (2/11) quando voltava ao Hawaii depois de nem disputar sua bateria do Rip Curl Pro Search em Porto Rico.

Irons faleceu em uma escala no Texas durante a rota entre Porto Rico e Havaí. Segundo relatos Andy contraiu a Dengue durante a etapa de Portugal do mundial de surfe. O surfista ainda viajou até Porto Rico para tentar participar da nona etapa do circuito, mas se sentiu mal e não apareceu nas duas baterias do primeiro e segundo round da competição.

O atleta passou mal desde chegou a Porto Rico e sequer saiu do hotel.

O clima está bastante tenso em Porto Rico, onde acontece a penúltima etapa do circuito mundial, devido à morte de Andy Irons. Além de família, amigos e uma legião de fãs, o atleta deixa uma esposa grávida de 8 meses.

A Billabong, patrocinadora de Irons, divulgou um boletim para informar a morte do atleta, agradeceu o apoio dos amigos e fãs e fez um pedido pela preservação da privacidade da família. "A família pede para não ser procurada neste momento de perda profunda", diz o texto.

Irons começou sua trajetória campeã na elite do ASP World Tour em 1998 e conseguiu a expressiva marca de 20 títulos na carreira, incluindo quatro conquistas da Tríplice Coroa Havaiana e um título do mundial Júnior.
