The East Coast Event of ASP World Tour will be in New York

Quiksilver and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) today announced the Quiksilver Pro New York, set to take place on Long Island’s Long Beach from September 4-15. The Quiksilver Pro New York will be the 6th stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour and the first-ever ASP World Tour stop on the East Coast of the United States. The event will offer a $1 million dollar prize purse to competitors, an amount unprecedented in professional surfing. The Quiksilver Pro New York will expand the Quiksilver Pro Global Series, which also includes the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia (February 26-March 9) and the Quiksilver Pro France (October 4-15).

“We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world on Long Island this September,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “There has always been a huge contingent of dedicated surfers and surf enthusiasts on the East Coast and they will now get a chance to watch the world’s best surfers in Long Beach. We are also bringing the best and brightest Quiksilver, Roxy and DC athletes to New York City, the largest media arena in the world, for twelve days of surf, skate, BMX, fashion, art and music that will bring incredible global attention to these phenomenal athletes and the action sports culture and lifestyle.”

Tiago Pires Signs 10-Year Contract with Quiksilver

Tiago Pires (PRT), 30, entering his fourth season as an ASP World Tour campaigner has just signed a 10-year contract with international powerhouse Quiksilver. The “Portuguese Tiger” had this to say:

“It’s official. I’m part of the Quiksilver family from today and on for the next ten years. Really grateful for the opportunity and stoked to be a part of this project. It’s going to be an exciting year! Thanks everyone for their support and happy surfing. Best!”

Dane Reynolds Sidelined for 10 Weeks Following Knee Surgery by GrindTV

Reynolds injured his knee during his stay in Hawaii late last month. He’d nevertheless surfed the Billabong Pipeline Masters on what looked like a bad wheel, which means his problem has been nagging him for a while. In an effort to fix the problem once and for all Dane is headed for surgery tomorrow.

Things could have been worse. Apparently the doctors are saying the injury isn’t as bad as originally feared. “The good news is that it’s not an ACL injury,” said Quiksilver’s Michael Crawley. Crawley told Australia’s Coastal Watch. “Once the damage is repaired he’ll be back in better form than before.”

Recovery will keep Reynolds out of the water for 10 weeks.

High 5

Unlike Taylor Steele’s Castles in the Sky, High-5 has almost no dialog and rarely shows clips of land. Instead of focusing on the voyage itself, the flick jumps right into the action. On the bright side, there is more room for all the massive cutbacks and insane airs (even the ones they can’t land). Filmed within a 5 month window, Andrew Doheny, Eric Geiselman, Wade Goodall, Fergal Smith, and Andy Irons definitely had their fair share of amazing clips.

One of the cooler parts of the video was a small segment on Fergal Smith killing it in Ireland. In addition to the fierce slabs he dropped in on, Fergal Smith took it to the next level by carrying a camera while being shacked to give a perspective we don’t usually see in these films.

Of course, throughout the 40 minute film, Andy Irons doesn’t fail to amaze and Eric Geiselman lands countless gnarly airs.

To vamp up the flick, Transworld included various special effects which may or may not include an animated shark, a 400lb woman, and an occasional gnome; make sure to look out for them, some are easy to miss!

Among others, the soundtrack had bands on the down-low including “The Soft Pack,” “The drowning men,” and “Future Islands,” which blend in well with the flick, especially one of the opening songs, “Answer to Yourself

Julian Wilson signs with Nike 6.0 and Steph Gilmore is Quiksilver for Girls now!

While industry rumors have ran riot since last December, today it became official: 2011 ASP World Tour Rookie Julian Wilson has signed with Nike 6.0. The prodigious natural-footer from Australia’s Sunshine Coast is already an international heavy-hitter with several successful forays into the ASP World Tour as a wildcard, a profile biopic “Scratching the Surface” and his last-minute Hawaiian heroics to claim a spot onto the 2011 ASP World Tour.

Quiksilver is pleased to announce that it has signed current ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore to a five-year endorsement agreement. Under terms of the agreement Stephanie will ride for the Quiksilver team and has become a Quiksilver brand ambassador, joining a diverse and talented group which includes 13 other female artists, musicians, photographers, philanthropists and fashion designers representing Quiksilver’s lines for women. As a brand ambassador Stephanie will contribute to marketing initiatives and activities through her considerable creative talents.
